Artist’s Description:
I traveled to Spain to go to the Prado to see Velasquez’s painting, Las Meninas. While there, I was struck by another Velasquez painting titled Aesop and thought I would like to respond with a painting of my own that dealt with issues I saw in his masterpiece. This is how Aesop was started. As I worked, I read from the book “Venus in Exile” by Wendy Steiner and realized that, in many ways, I was also dealing with contemporary issues of art and society. These statements struck me as important:
‘Among the myriad issues surrounding beauty…is the female subject, so long its primary symbol in art. Avant-garde modernists were often repulsed by this symbolism. Indeed, the history of twentieth-century elite art is in many respects a history of resistance to the female subject as a symbol of beauty; this resistance, in its turn, is related to real world struggles during the past century, the past two centuries, in fact—as society learned (and continues to learn) to consider women fully human. In age old fables about female beauty, the fair maiden created hierarchy and competition…the problem is how to imagine female beauty in art of outside it, without invoking stories of dominance, victimization, and false consciousness.’
